Baptist Memorial Hospital-Oktibbeha Lung and Sleep Center
Rest Is Vital — Sleep and Lung Care in Starkville, Mississippi
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Oktibbeha Lung and Sleep Center is a modern five-bed sleep facility on the campus of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Oktibbeha County. Guided by a board-certified sleep specialist, our team diagnoses and treats a full range of sleep disorders for patients ages 13 and older — with short wait times for testing and fast turnaround for results.
The center is designed for comfort, with spacious private suites and complimentary hot breakfast meal tickets at the hospital cafeteria the morning after your study. Because our sleep specialists are also pulmonologists, the center coordinates lung specialty care alongside sleep care under one roof — so patients with sleep apnea, COPD, or overlapping breathing and sleep concerns can be evaluated and managed by the same team.
Our sleep medicine specialists evaluate and treat a wide range of sleep-related conditions, including:
- Sleep apnea — breathing pauses or gasping during sleep
- Restless leg syndrome — uncontrollable leg movements that disrupt sleep
- Insomnia — difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- Narcolepsy — excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep episodes
- Bruxism — teeth grinding or clenching during sleep
- Shift work sleep disorder — sleep disruption caused by non-standard work schedules
- Snoring — especially when paired with choking, gasping or pauses in breathing
If you have been searching for a sleep specialist, an insomnia doctor or a sleep medicine specialist in Starkville, this is a place to start.
The center offers a full menu of diagnostic sleep testing and treatment procedures, including:
- Polysomnography — a comprehensive in-lab sleep study that records brain activity, breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels and body movement across a full night of sleep
- CPAP and BiPAP titration — in-lab calibration of positive-airway-pressure therapy for sleep apnea management
- Oxygen titration and administration — for patients whose oxygen levels drop during sleep
- Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT) — a daytime sleep study used to evaluate excessive daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT) — measures your ability to stay awake during quiet, low-stimulation conditions
- Home sleep testing — for patients whose evaluation can be done outside the lab
All testing takes place in the five-bed sleep lab at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Oktibbeha County.
Sleep disorders affect more than energy levels — they can influence heart health, mood, memory and safety. If you notice any of the following, talk with your physician about a sleep evaluation:
- Chronic fatigue and excessive daytime sleepiness
- Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep
- Difficulty staying awake while driving
- Frequent nighttime urination
- Morning headaches
- Poor memory, focus or concentration
- Irritability, depression or mood swings
- Chest pain at night
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
Before Your Study
Your referring physician sends the order to the sleep center, and our team contacts you to schedule. On the day of your study, keep your normal routine, avoid caffeine after lunch, and bring loose sleepwear, toiletries, a book, and any medications you take at bedtime.
During Your Study
You check in at the sleep center in the evening. A sleep technologist walks you through the process, applies the sensors that record brain, breathing, heart and movement data, and settles you into a private suite. You sleep in your own bed, in your own room — the technologist monitors from a control room throughout the night.
In the Morning
You are usually done by 6 a.m. and can head to work, school or home. Baptist Memorial Hospital-Oktibbeha Lung and Sleep Center provides complimentary meal tickets for a hot breakfast at the hospital cafeteria. Your physician and our sleep specialist review the results and follow up with you to walk through any diagnosis and treatment plan.
Because our sleep specialists are also board-certified pulmonologists, the center serves as an access point for lung care alongside sleep care. Patients being evaluated for sleep apnea, COPD, chronic cough, shortness of breath or overlapping breathing-and-sleep concerns can be seen and managed by the same team.
For outpatient pulmonology visits — pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy consultations, COPD management, pleural effusion evaluation and ongoing pulmonology follow-up — patients are seen at Baptist Medical Group-Starkville Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, the outpatient clinic that shares our physicians.
Our sleep and lung specialists include:
Board-certified pulmonologist and sleep specialist
